The pandemic has revolutionized everything, including dental hygiene in a world where only a few dental offices are open. Striving to maintain your oral health might prove to be futile most times, and it’s even more difficult with the current pandemic.

A survey by the  American Dental Association showed that over 95% of dentists closed due to the pandemic. In the early stage of the pandemic, dental appointments were canceled with traveling becoming almost impossible.

Despite the new outlook, you must remember to take care of yourself, especially your oral hygiene. In an age where your health is your number one defense, you really shouldn’t take chances.

How To Practice Good Dental Hygiene During A Pandemic

1. Regular Brushing

Pandemic or not; brushing your teeth is a must. There is no way around this, and your options are diverse too. You can use either an electric brush or perhaps a manual one. Depending on your preference, you can choose between hard, medium, and soft brushes. While brushing, you have to ensure that every tooth is sparkling. It entails both the outer and inner tooth surfaces, including the premolars and molars. The ideal duration for brushing is two minutes, and never forget to brush your tongue thoroughly.

2. Use Mouthwash

Using mouthwash is not a substitute for brushing but rather to get rid of bacteria. There are different brands online, and they can help you prevent mouth odor and remove bacteria from the mouth. When using a mouthwash, gargle and swish the mouthwash in your mouth for 30-seconds before finally spewing it out. Doing this every day is guaranteed to give you a fresh breath.

3. Floss Every Day

As you make brushing a daily habit, you should also floss to remove plaque from between your teeth. Through flossing, you can reach areas that your brush can’t meet. However, there are different types of dental floss that you can try, such as:

  • Waxed floss
  • Unwaxed floss
  • Dental tape
  • Superfloss
  • Floss holder, etc.

While flossing your teeth, you should be careful to avoid damaging your teeth or hurting your gum. Such an accident can be pretty painful and uncomfortable when trying to eat.

4. Be considerate

It encompasses everything that contributes to the overall health of your teeth. It includes reducing the way you snack, restocking on dental products and eating healthy. You don’t need to buy in bulk, but rather take what you need for a few weeks on lockdown. The reason is that others may need these products; buying what you need is giving others a chance to practice good hygiene as well.

One of the ways to stay on top of your dental health is to brush twice every day. If there is ever a dental issue, never fail to address the problem right away. If you’re just starting, making it a habit will take some time. But by reestablishing a proper dental routine at home; your oral health will thank you for it.
