The Importance of Dental Checkups

by | Jun 1, 2012

Does going to the dentist scare you?  Do you only go to the dentist when you are in pain or you feel that something is wrong? Did you know that you are supposed to visit the dentist for a general check-up once every six months?  Many of us don’t visit our dentists as regularly as we probably should because of the fear of pain or because of the inconvenience.  But at Oakwood Dental, we encourage our patients to visit us regularly by providing them with a safe and comfortable environment that they can feel secure in.  As the premiere dentist on Staten Island, we want to inform our patients about the importance of visiting us regularly and the significance of maintaining a healthy mouth.

Visiting your dentist regularly for a general exam is extremely important to your oral health as well as your overall health.  During the exam, we will check for loose teeth, gum disease, and evidence of tooth decay.  If you have any of these problems, it is important to rectify them immediately.  This is part of the reason why it is so important to visit your dentist regularly.  During the exam, we will also check the health of your tongue, examine the tissues of your mouth, check your bite, check for broken teeth, check for cavities, check for broken fillings, and check the contact between your teeth.  If any of these problems go untreated, it can lead to the need for root canals, gum surgery, or the removal or teeth.  Our examinations are crucial to the health of your mouth and it is vital that you remain on top of your oral health. At Oakwood Dental, we want to help you do that.  We will also take an x-ray of your teeth, which will help show us the condition of your teeth, their roots, your jaw placement, and the overall structure of your facial bones to make sure everything is as it should be.  X-rays also help us see any abnormal growths and the exact location of impacted teeth.  X-rays can also help us identify the location of cavities and other signs of disease that may not be visible during the general examination.  During the examination we will also clean your teeth, which is important as well.  Obtaining a professional cleaning every few months helps your teeth stay healthy and helps them remain cleaner for a longer period of time.  During the cleaning, we will remove any excess plaque buildup from the gum line, polish your teeth, and floss between your teeth to remove any excess waste or bacteria.  Our professional cleaning will also leave you with a brighter smile.

Overall, it is imperative that you visit your dentist regularly to maintain your oral health.  We know how important it is to keep a healthy mouth, and Oakwood Dental wants to help you keep your mouth healthy while making you feel safe and comfortable.  Call or visit Oakwood Dental to discuss the health of your teeth and schedule an appointment for an examination.
